Artist’s Statement

Angela Prosper is a photographer who is passionate about the stories food can tell us about our culture. Using both digital and film, she captures the essence of culinary heritage, candid community, and the art of cooking. Inspired by her Puerto Rican background and her time in Civita de Bagnoregio, Italy, Angela blends European and Indigenous food traditions in her work, exploring the ancestral stories within our food.

Angela’s belief in food as a universal language that unites us across cultures and ages is at the heart of her work. Her photos delve into the intricate relationship between food, culture, and history, illuminating the beauty and artistry in everyday cooking and the significance of shared meals. Her work underscores the importance of being present in cooking, the sensory experience of food, and the mindfulness it demands, inviting us all to partake in this universal experience.

Angela’s photography and writing are a testament to her ongoing journey of discovery and her curiosity about her cultural identity, where food is seen as heritage, family, and home. She firmly believes in the power of food to unite communities and bridge cultural divides, and she invites you to join her in this mission of preservation.

In 2021, the Civita Institute granted Angela a fellowship for her research on Etruscan Hilltowns and the local food traditions of Tuscia.
