28 Jan New Orleans & Central Florida
This was the first time I have been to New Orleans. I remember driving by the city on my way back to Florida. I was helping a friend move across the country and it was only a year after Katrina. We did not dare go in and that troubled me.
I have felt connected to the city for a very long time. It turns out that some of the original Prosper family came through and settled in New Orleans as well as New York City and Montreal. My aunt always said there was French in my blood but I didn’t know more than that until my mother informed me there was a French artist who settled in Puerto Rico and became my great grandfather. I don’t know much about my family history from this point so knowing that little bit was enough to help me find the connection.
Since we had two weeks we also decided to spend a week in Florida. I grew up there but haven’t been back in over 9 years. I wanted my long time boyfriend to meet my family and see the places I miss and what I love about Florida. Even though I have now lived longer in Seattle than I have in Tampa – Ybor City still holds a special place in my heart.
